Older adults are expected to double to 71 million by 2030. Among older adults, 42% report a functional limitation or disability. Despite a slight decline in disability rates in recent years, the number of older adults with disabilities is predicted to increase, particularly among low-income, minority, and low-education older adults.” (Pho et al. 2012 para. 5) One strategy that can be implemented is the use of an Occupational Therapist (OT) to assist the patient with performing ADLs for those individuals with needs. “The OT focuses exclusively on what hinders an individual from performing their IADLs/ADLs without difficulty. The OT recommends reducing environmental barriers, improving the person-environment fit, and increasing independence in IADLs/ADL function.” (Pho et al. 2012 para. 10) The RN can advocate for the patient by assessing needs and connecting the patient to the appropriate therapist. The RN could also provide education on physical activity to the older adult. “Engaging in physical activity is a significant health promotion intervention for compensating for age-related changes that affect musculoskeletal function. Positive effects of exercise include improved functioning, increased bone strength, and prevention of falls and disability. Flexibility exercises can improve range of motion, and weight-bearing exercise is an essential intervention for osteoporosis. (Miller 2018, pg. 473) Many interventions nurse can implement many interventions for diverse older adults. The nurse must assess the patient and the patient’s goals, analyze the data, and develop a care plan including the patient to achieve optimal outcomes.
